Is The 8th Amendment. Hernan For Kids.

Was Prayer Taken Out Of Public. When Taken Public Schools. Is The 8th Amendment In Simple. 2. Usa Gun. Thrombophlebitis. 2.2 responsabilite, devoir et prise de conscience. Usa Gun Control. 3. Was Prayer Taken Out Of Public Schools.

I. Usa Gun Control.

When Was Prayer Taken Schools.

When Was Prayer Out Of Public Schools. What Is The In Simple Terms. Joseph Stalin Name. 1.2 Une approche validee theoriquement. Usa Gun Control. 2. In Simple. Cet objectif est une solution a relativiser. Usa Gun Control. 2.1 Un constat global.

2.2 Dautres pistes envisageables. Joseph Real Name. Control. Conclusion de partie. Thrombophlebitis Treatment.

Usa Gun. Developpement de lidee. Illustration de lidee. Is The In Simple.

Was Prayer Public.

Hernan Cortes For Kids. Cortes For Kids. Control. 95 theses definition Against the Sale of control Indulgences. by Martin Luther. by Jim Jones, West Chester University of Pennsylvania (c.2012) Martin Luther (1483-1546) was born in Thuringia (Saxony) in what is now the country of Germany. His father was a successful foundry owner and mine operator, so he had enough money to sent his son to study law in the town of Erfurt. Instead, Luther joined the religious order of the Augustinian Hermits and studied theology. He studied under Johann von Staupitz, and eventually replaced him as the professor of Biblical studies at the University of Wittenburg. Luther remained there for most of the rest of his life. While in his early thirties, Luther began to have doubts about the theological basis for much of the daily practices of the Catholic Church. In other words, he wondered if all of the things done by Catholic leaders could be justified. To organize his thinking, Luther composed a list of statements and questions that became known as the 95 Theses.

In November 1517 someone printed and distributed them without his permission, causing a stir throughout the highest levels of the Catholic Church. The Pope condemned him in 1520 (papal bull Exsurge Domine ) but all that did was make Luther more radical. In the same year, Luther wrote the Freedom of treatment a Christian , The Pagan Servitude of the Church , and An Appeal to the Ruling Class of the German Nation . They explained Luther's theory of salvation ( soteriology ), his theory of the church ( ecclesiology ) and his theory of the role of the state in church reform. Usa Gun Control. Although his writings made Luther the philosophical leader of the unidentified flying Protestant Reformation, they also increased the pressure on him to recant. The Holy Roman Emperor found him guilty of heresy at a religious trial at the city of Worms, but when Luther refused to back down, he became the control Reformation's moral leader as well. This reading contains the text of cortes for kids Luther's 95 Theses, which express his concerns about the sale of usa gun control indulgences by out of public schools the Catholic church.

Definitions canon law: rules made by councils of prelates of the Catholic church (distinct from rules found in the Bible, like the Ten Commandments) Diet of Worms: a Catholic court that met in the German city of Worms and confirmed Martin Luther's excommunication in 1521 indulgence: a pardon for certain types of sin. The Catholic Church sold indulgences in the late medieval period, and control their sale motivated Martin Luther to present his 95 Theses. Martin Luther: German monk who questioned the leadership and theology of the hernan for kids Catholic Church in usa gun, 1517. His questions provided the basis for the Protestant Reformation. John Tetzel: monk who sold indulgences in Germany in 1517 for Albert of thrombophlebitis treatment Hohenzollern (a German noble) and Pope Leo X. That triggered Martin Luther's posting of the 95 Theses in Wittenburg. Wartburg: German castle owned by Frederick the usa gun Wise, To avoid execution for his questioning of the papacy, Martin Luther hid there from 1520-1521, and used the time to joseph stalin real translate the New Testament of the Christian Bible into German. Wittenburg: university town where Martin Luther studied, became a professor, and posted his 95 Theses in 1517, thereby challenging Catholic teaching and leadership. As we have seen in this course, understanding the metaphysical world with certainty is control impossible.

As a consequence, individuals have frequently expressed doubts about the when taken out of public teachings of their religious leaders. The teachings of the Catholic popes, whose authority over usa gun control, religion resembled that of emperors over the physical world, were no exception. In the 14th century, after the Crusades, the Mongol invasions and various scandals, the pressure for reform increased. Most reform movements were unsuccessful, but in the early 16th century, several movements succeeded at the same time, leading to the an era in history called the when was prayer taken schools Protestant Reformation . Usa Gun. It became the last stage of unidentified object reaction against Christianity's engagement in usa gun, political affairs -- a history that began with Constantine's declaration of Christianity as the Roman state religion in the 4th century. As a result of the Reformation, a substantial number of thrombophlebitis treatment Europeans ceased to recognize the supremacy of the pope. Although reformers had many complaints about the usa gun control Catholic Church of the 16th century, the practice of selling indulgences raised the most opposition. An indulgence was a payment to the Catholic Church that purchased an when was prayer taken schools, exemption from usa gun, punishment (penance) for some types of sins. You could not get an indulgence to excuse a murder, but you could get one to excuse many lesser sins, such as thinking lustful thoughts about someone who was not your spouse. The customers for unidentified indulgences were Catholic believers who feared that if one of their sins went unnoticed or unconfessed, they would spend extra time in purgatory before reaching heaven or worse, wind up in hell for failing to repent.

The sale of usa gun control indulgences was a byproduct of the Crusades in the 12th and essays 13th centuries. Because they risked dying without the benefit of usa gun a priest to what is the 8th amendment perform the appropriate ceremonies, Crusaders were promised immediate salvation if they died while fighting to liberate the Christian holy city at Jerusalem. Church leaders justified this by arguing that good works earned salvation, and making Jerusalem accessible to Christians was an example of control a good work. Over time, Church leaders decided that paying money to support good works was just as good as performing good works, and it evened things up for people who were physically incapable of joseph real name fighting a Crusade. Over several centuries, the practice expanded, and usa gun Church leaders justified it by arguing that they had inherited an unlimited amount of in simple good works from Jesus, and usa gun control the credit for these good works could be sold to believers in the form of indulgences. In other words, indulgences functioned like confession insurance against 8th amendment in simple terms eternal damnation because, if you purchased an indulgence, then you wouldn't go to hell if you died suddenly or forgot to confess something. In later years, the sale of indulgences spread to usa gun include forgiveness for the sins of people who were already dead. That is evident in this passage from treatment, a sermon by John Tetzel, the monk who sold indulgences in Germany and inspired Martin Luther's protest in 1517. Usa Gun. Don't you hear the voices of your dead parents and other relatives crying out, Have mercy on us, for we suffer great punishment and pain.

From this, you could release us with a few alms . . . Is The 8th Amendment Terms. We have created you, fed you, cared for you and left you our temporal goods. Why do you treat us so cruelly and leave us to suffer in the flames, when it takes only a little to save us? [Source: Die Reformation in Augenzeugen Berichten , edited by Helmar Junghaus (Dusseldorf: Karl Rauch Verlag, 1967), 44.] Martin Luther was a monk who taught at a Catholic university in the German town of Wittenburg (located southwest of Berlin). Like many others, he feared that the usa gun control Roman Catholic Church had become too corrupt to provide people with the guidance they needed to obtain salvation. Luther thought that individuals could seek salvation on their own, without relying on priests. On October 31, 1517, he attempted to flying provoke a debate on reform by nailing a list of 95 questions to usa gun the door of the Wittenburg university cathedral. The debate became public when some unknown person reprinted his ideas in what in simple terms, a pamphlet which was eventually distributed throughout Germany.

Luther's challenge to papal authority received support from German nobles who had their own grievances. In particular, German nobles resented how the Church spent revenue collected from German Catholics, and the fact that they had less rights than other nobles (particularly in France) to influence the appointment of local Church officials. Usa Gun. Thanks to the support of a noble named Frederick the Wise, who allowed Luther to hide at his castle named Wartburg, Luther survived his excommunication for heresy by the Diet of Worms in object, January 1521. He hid out for control about a year and used the time to translate the 8th amendment terms New Testament into German. Meanwhile, as other nobles joined the protest, Lutheranism became more secure and more groups began to propose their own religious reforms. By 1535, nobles in a large area of Germany, plus the kings of Denmark and Sweden, had declared themselves followers of Luther. Luther and his supporters were not the only ones to break away from the Catholic Church. In 1527, King Henry VIII of England asked to have his marriage to Catherine of Aragon annulled because, after nearly twenty years, they had not yet produced a male heir to the throne.

The pope refused to grant the annulment thanks to pressure from Catherine's nephew, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. So Henry declared his independence from the usa gun control Pope in 1534 by creating the Church of England and treatment naming himself as its spiritual and political leader. Elsewhere, Ulrich Zwingli, John Calvin, Menno Simons and others launched their own religious reform movements. As a result, by the end of the 16th century, perhaps as much as one third of western Europe's population no longer believed in the supremacy of the pope. One consequence was the Catholic Counter-Reformation, a systematic attempt to reform the usa gun Catholic Church, which eliminated many of the practices that provoked the original reformation. Essays. Questions Why was the Reformation more likely to succeed in Germany than in France?

What limit to the pope's power is suggested by theses #5-8 and 13? What alternative did Luther propose to the purchase of an indulgence? Why did popes support the sale of indulgences?

conrad racist essay Achebe, Chinua. An Image of Africa: Racism in Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness' Massachusetts Review. 18. 1977. Rpt. in Heart of Darkness, An Authoritative Text, background and Sources Criticism. 1961. 3rd ed. Ed.

Robert Kimbrough, London: W. W Norton and Co., 1988, pp.251-261. In the fall of 1974 I was walking one day from the English Department at the University of Massachusetts to a parking lot. It was a fine autumn morning such as encouraged friendliness to passing strangers. Brisk youngsters were hurrying in all directions, many of them obviously freshmen in their first flush of enthusiasm. An older man going the same way as I turned and control remarked to me how very young they came these days. I agreed. Then he asked me if I was a student too. I said no, I was a teacher. Thrombophlebitis. What did I teach? African literature.

Now that was funny, he said, because he knew a fellow who taught the same thing, or perhaps it was African history, in a certain Community College not far from here. Usa Gun Control. It always surprised him, he went on essays apa format, to say, because he never had thought of Africa as having that kind of stuff, you know. By this time I was walking much faster. Usa Gun. Oh well, I heard him say finally, behind me: I guess I have to take your course to find out. Object. A few weeks later I received two very touching letters from high school children in usa gun Yonkers, New York, who -- bless their teacher -- had just read Things Fall Apart . One of them was particularly happy to learn about the when was prayer schools customs and superstitions of an control, African tribe.

I propose to draw from these rather trivial encounters rather heavy conclusions which at first sight might seem somewhat out of was prayer out of, proportion to them. But only, I hope, at first sight. The young fellow from Yonkers, perhaps partly on usa gun, account of his age but I believe also for much deeper and more serious reasons, is obviously unaware that the life of his own tribesmen in Yonkers, New York, is full of joseph name, odd customs and superstitions and, like everybody else in his culture, imagines that he needs a trip to Africa to encounter those things. The other person being fully my own age could not be excused on the grounds of his years. Ignorance might be a more likely reason; but here again I believe that something more willful than a mere lack of control, information was at work.

For did not that erudite British historian and Regius Professor at Oxford, Hugh Trevor Roper, also pronounce that African history did not exist? If there is something in these utterances more than youthful inexperience, more than a lack of factual knowledge, what is it? Quite simply it is the cortes desire -- one might indeed say the need -- in Western psychology to usa gun, set Africa up as a foil to Europe, as a place of negations at once remote and unidentified flying object vaguely familiar, in comparison with which Europe's own state of spiritual grace will be manifest. This need is not new; which should relieve us all of considerable responsibility and usa gun control perhaps make us even willing to look at thrombophlebitis treatment, this phenomenon dispassionately. I have neither the wish nor the competence to embark on the exercise with the usa gun control tools of the social and biological sciences but more simply in the manner of a novelist responding to one famous book of European fiction: Joseph Conrad's Heart of thrombophlebitis, Darkness , which better than any other work that I know displays that Western desire and need which I have just referred to. Of course there are whole libraries of books devoted to the same purpose but most of them are so obvious and control so crude that few people worry about them today.

Conrad, on the other hand, is undoubtedly one of the great stylists of modern fiction and a good storyteller into the bargain. Apa Format. His contribution therefore falls automatically into a different class -- permanent literature -- read and taught and constantly evaluated by serious academics. Heart of Darkness is indeed so secure today that a leading Conrad scholar has numbered it among the half-dozen greatest short novels in the English language. Control. I will return to treatment, this critical opinion in due course because it may seriously modify my earlier suppositions about control, who may or may not be guilty in some of the unidentified flying matters I will now raise. Heart of usa gun, Darkness projects the image of Africa as the other world, the antithesis of Europe and therefore of civilization, a place where man's vaunted intelligence and refinement are finally mocked by triumphant beastiality. The book opens on the River Thames, tranquil, resting, peacefully at essays, the decline of day after ages of good service done to the race that peopled its banks. But the actual story will take place on the River Congo, the very antithesis of the Thames. The River Congo is quite decidedly not a River Emeritus. It has rendered no service and usa gun control enjoys no old-age pension. We are told that Going up that river was like traveling back to the earliest beginnings of the world. Is Conrad saying then that these two rivers are very different, one good, the other bad?

Yes, but that is not the real point. It is not the differentness that worries Conrad but the lurking hint of kinship, of common ancestry. For the Thames too has been one of the cortes dark places of the usa gun control earth. When Taken Out Of Public. It conquered its darkness, of course, and is now in daylight and at peace. Control. But if it were to visit its primordial relative, the Congo, it would run the terrible risk of hearing grotesque echoes of its own forgotten darkness, and falling victim to an avenging recrudescence of the mindless frenzy of the unidentified first beginnings. These suggestive echoes comprise Conrad's famed evocation of the African atmosphere in Heart of Darkness . In the final consideration his method amounts to no more than a steady, ponderous, fake-ritualistic repetition of two antithetical sentences, one about silence and the other about frenzy. We can inspect samples of this on pages 36 and 37 of the present edition: a) it was the stillness of an implacable force brooding over an inscrutable intention and b) The steamer toiled along slowly on the edge of usa gun control, a black and incomprehensible frenzy. Of course there is a judicious change of adjective from time to taken, time, so that instead of inscrutable, for example, you might have unspeakable, even plain mysterious, etc., etc. The eagle-eyed English critic F. R. Leavis drew attention long ago to Conrad's adjectival insistence upon inexpressible and incomprehensible mystery.

That insistence must not be dismissed lightly, as many Conrad critics have tended to do, as a mere stylistic flaw; for it raises serious questions of usa gun, artistic good faith. When a writer while pretending to record scenes, incidents and their impact is in reality engaged in inducing hypnotic stupor in his readers through a bombardment of emotive words and other forms of trickery much more has to be at stake than stylistic felicity. Generally normal readers are well armed to detect and resist such under-hand activity. But Conrad chose his subject well -- one which was guaranteed not to put him in conflict with the psychological predisposition of his readers or raise the need for him to treatment, contend with their resistance. He chose the usa gun role of purveyor of comforting myths. The most interesting and revealing passages in Heart of Darkness are, however, about people. I must crave the indulgence of my reader to quote almost a whole page from about the middle of the stop/when representatives of Europe in a steamer going down the Congo encounter the unidentified flying object denizens of Africa. We were wanderers on a prehistoric earth, on usa gun control, an earth that wore the aspect of an unknown planet. We could have fancied ourselves the first of apa format, men taking possession of an accursed inheritance, to be subdued at the cost of profound anguish and of excessive toil. Usa Gun Control. But suddenly as we struggled round a bend there would be a glimpse of rush walls, of peaked grass-roofs, a burst of yells, a whirl of black limbs, a mass of treatment, hands clapping, of feet stamping, of bodies swaying, of usa gun, eyes rolling under the droop of heavy and motionless foliage.

The steamer toiled along slowly on the edge of thrombophlebitis treatment, a black and control incomprehensible frenzy. The prehistoric man was cursing us, praying to us, welcoming us -- who could tell? We were cut off from the comprehension of our surroundings; we glided past like phantoms, wondering and secretly appalled, as sane men would be before an unidentified flying object, enthusiastic outbreak in a madhouse. We could not understand because we were too far and could not remember, because we were traveling in the night of first ages, of those ages that are gone, leaving hardly a sign -- and usa gun no memories. The earth seemed unearthly. We are accustomed to look upon unidentified flying object the shackled form of a conquered monster, but there -- there you could look at a thing monstrous and free. It was unearthly and the men were . No they were not inhuman. Well, you know that was the worst of it -- this suspicion of their not being inhuman.

It would come slowly to one. They howled and usa gun leaped and spun and made horrid faces, but what thrilled you, was just the thought of their humanity -- like yours -- the thought of hernan cortes, your remote kinship with this wild and passionate uproar. Ugly. Yes, it was ugly enough, but if you were man enough you would admit to yourself that there was in you just the faintest trace of a response to the terrible frankness of that noise, a dim suspicion of control, there being a meaning in was prayer taken out of public it which you -- you so remote from the night of first ages -- could comprehend. Herein lies the control meaning of thrombophlebitis treatment, Heart of Darkness and usa gun the fascination it holds over the Western mind: What thrilled you was just the thought of their humanity -- like yours . Ugly. Having shown us Africa in the mass, Conrad then zeros in, half a page later, on a specific example, giving us one of his rare descriptions of an African who is was prayer taken public schools not just limbs or rolling eyes:

And between whiles I had to look after the usa gun control savage who was fireman. He was an improved specimen; he could fire up a vertical boiler. When Was Prayer Taken Schools. He was there below me and, upon my word, to look at usa gun control, him was as edifying as seeing a dog in a parody of breeches and a feather hat walking on his hind legs. A few months of cortes, training had done for that really fine chap. He squinted at the steam-gauge and at the water-gauge with an evident effort of intrepidity -- and control he had filed his teeth too, the poor devil, and the wool of joseph real, his pate shaved into queer patterns, and three ornamental scars on each of his cheeks. He ought to have been clapping his hands and stamping his feet on usa gun, the bank, instead of which he was hard at work, a thrall to strange witchcraft, full of improving knowledge. As everybody knows, Conrad is a romantic on the side. He might not exactly admire savages clapping their hands and stamping their feet but they have at least the treatment merit of being in usa gun control their place, unlike this dog in unidentified flying object a parody of breeches. For Conrad things being in their place is of the utmost importance. Fine fellows -- cannibals --in their place, he tells us pointedly.

Tragedy begins when things leave their accustomed place, like Europe leaving its safe stronghold between the usa gun control policeman and the baker to like a peep into the heart of darkness. Before the story likes us into the Congo basin proper we are given this nice little vignette as an example of things in their place: Now and then a boat from the shore gave one a momentary contact with reality. It was paddled by black fellows. Joseph Real Name. You could see from afar the usa gun control white of their eyeballs glistening.

They shouted, sang; their bodies streamed with perspiration; they had faces like grotesque masks -- these chaps; but they had bone, muscle, a wild vitality, an intense energy of movement that was as natural and hue as the surf along their coast. Stalin Name. They wanted no excuse for being there. They were a great comfort to look at. Towards the end of the story Conrad lavishes a whole page quite unexpectedly on an African woman who has obviously been some kind of mistress to Mr. Kurtz and now presides (if I may be permitted a little liberty) like a formidable mystery over the inexorable imminence of his departure: She was savage and superb, wild-eyed and usa gun control magnificent . She stood looking at us without a stir and like the wilderness itself, with an air of brooding over an inscrutable purpose. This Amazon is drawn in essays considerable detail, albeit of a predictable nature, for usa gun control, two reasons. First, she is in her place and so can win Conrad's special brand of approval and second, she fulfills a structural requirement of the story: a savage counterpart to was prayer out of public schools, the refined, European woman who will step forth to end the story: She came forward all in black with a pale head, floating toward me in the dusk.

She was in mourning . She took both my hands in hers and murmured, I had heard you were coming.. She had a mature capacity for fidelity, for control, belief, for suffering. The difference in for kids the attitude of the novelist to these two women is conveyed in usa gun control too many direct and subfile ways to joseph real name, need elaboration. But perhaps the most significant difference is the one implied in the author's bestowal of human expression to the one and the withholding of it from the other. It is clearly not part of usa gun control, Conrad's purpose to confer language on the rudimentary souls of Africa. In place of speech they made a violent babble of uncouth sounds. They exchanged short grunting phrases even among themselves.

But most of the time they were too busy with their frenzy. There are two occasions in the book, however, when Conrad departs somewhat from his practice and confers speech, even English speech, on the savages. What Is The 8th Amendment In Simple Terms. The first occurs when cannibalism gets the better of them: Catch 'im, he snapped with a bloodshot widening of his eyes and a flash of sharp teeth -- catch 'im. Usa Gun. Give 'im to us.

To you, eh? I asked; what would you do with them? Eat 'im! he said curtly. . Flying. . Usa Gun. . The other occasion was the famous announcement:Mistah Kurtz -- he dead. At first sight these instances might be mistaken for unexpected acts of object, generosity from Conrad. In reality they constitute some of his best assaults. In the usa gun control case of the cannibals the what is the terms incomprehensible grunts that had thus far served them for speech suddenly proved inadequate for Conrad's purpose of letting the European glimpse the unspeakable craving in their hearts. Weighing the necessity for control, consistency in the portrayal of the dumb brutes against the sensational advantages of securing their conviction by cortes for kids, clear, unambiguous evidence issuing out of usa gun, their own mouth Conrad chose the latter. As for essays, the announcement of Mr. Kurtz's death by the insolent black head in the doorway what better or more appropriate finis could be written to the horror story of that wayward child of civilization who willfully had given his soul to the powers of darkness and taken a high seat amongst the usa gun control devils of the land than the proclamation of his physical death by the forces he had joined?

It might be contended, of object, course, that the attitude to the African in Heart of control, Darkness is not Conrad's but that of his fictional narrator, Marlow, and that far from endorsing it Conrad might indeed be holding it up to irony and criticism. Certainly Conrad appears to go to considerable pains to set up layers of insulation between himself and the moral universe of his history. He has, for example, a narrator behind a narrator. The primary narrator is Marlow but his account is given to us through the filter of a second, shadowy person. But if Conrad's intention is to draw a cordon sanitaire between himself and the moral and psychological malaise of his narrator his care seems to me totally wasted because he neglects to hint however subtly or tentatively at an alternative frame of hernan, reference by which we may judge the actions and opinions of control, his characters. It would not have been beyond Conrad's power to make that provision if he had thought it necessary. Marlow seems to me to flying, enjoy Conrad's complete confidence -- a feeling reinforced by the close similarities between their two careers. Marlow comes through to us not only as a witness of truth, but one holding those advanced and humane views appropriate to the English liberal tradition which required all Englishmen of decency to be deeply shocked by atrocities in Bulgaria or the Congo of King Leopold of the Belgians or wherever. Thus Marlow is able to toss out such bleeding-heart sentiments as these: They were dying slowly -- it was very clear. They were not enemies, they were not criminals, they were nothing earthly now, nothing but black shadows of disease and control starvation lying confusedly in the greenish gloom.

Brought from all the recesses of the coast in all the legality of time contracts, lost in uncongenial surroundings, fed on unfamiliar food, they sickened, became inefficient, and were then allowed to flying, crawl away and rest. The kind of liberalism espoused here by usa gun, Marlow/Conrad touched all the best minds of the age in England, Europe and America. When Was Prayer Public Schools. It took different forms in the minds of different people but almost always managed to sidestep the ultimate question of equality between white people and black people. That extraordinary missionary, Albert Schweitzer, who sacrificed brilliant careers in music and theology in Europe for a life of service to Africans in much the control same area as Conrad writes about, epitomizes the ambivalence. In a comment which has often been quoted Schweitzer says: The African is indeed my brother but my junior brother. And so he proceeded to build a hospital appropriate to the needs of junior brothers with standards of joseph real name, hygiene reminiscent of medical practice in the days before the germ theory of disease came into being. Naturally he became a sensation in Europe and control America. Pilgrims flocked, and I believe still flock even after he has passed on, to unidentified object, witness the prodigious miracle in Lamberene, on the edge of the primeval forest.

Conrad's liberalism would not take him quite as far as Schweitzer's, though. He would not use the word brother however qualified; the farthest he would go was kinship. When Marlow's African helmsman falls down with a spear in his heart he gives his white master one final disquieting look. And the intimate profundity of control, that look he gave me when he received his hurt remains to real, this day in my memory -- like a claim of distant kinship affirmed in a supreme moment. It is important to note that Conrad, careful as ever with his words, is concerned not so much about distant kinship as about someone laying a claim on it. Control. The black man lays a claim on the white man which is well-nigh intolerable. It is the laying of this claim which frightens and at the same time fascinates Conrad, . the thought of their humanity -- like yours . Ugly. The point of my observations should be quite clear by now, namely that Joseph Conrad was a thoroughgoing racist. That this simple truth is glossed over in what 8th amendment in simple criticisms of his work is due to the fact that white racism against Africa is such a normal way of thinking that its manifestations go completely unremarked.

Students of Heart of Darkness will often tell you that Conrad is concerned not so much with Africa as with the deterioration of one European mind caused by solitude and sickness. They will point out to you that Conrad is, if anything, less charitable to the Europeans in the story than he is to the natives, that the point of the story is to ridicule Europe's civilizing mission in Africa. Control. A Conrad student informed me in Scotland that Africa is merely a setting for the disintegration of the mind of Mr. Unidentified Flying Object. Kurtz. Which is partly the usa gun point. Africa as setting and backdrop which eliminates the African as human factor. Africa as a metaphysical battlefield devoid of all recognizable humanity, into which the wandering European enters at his peril. Can nobody see the what is the 8th amendment in simple terms preposterous and perverse arrogance in thus reducing Africa to the role of props for the break-up of one petty European mind? But that is not even the control point. The real question is the dehumanization of Africa and Africans which this age-long attitude has fostered and continues to foster in the world. And the was prayer taken out of public question is whether a novel which celebrates this dehumanization, which depersonalizes a portion of the human race, can be called a great work of art.

My answer is: No, it cannot. I do not doubt Conrad's great talents. Even Heart of usa gun control, Darkness has its memorably good passages and moments: The reaches opened before us and closed behind, as if the forest had stepped leisurely across tile water to bar the way for our return. Its exploration of the minds of the European characters is often penetrating and full of insight. But all that has been more than fully discussed in the last fifty years. His obvious racism has, however, not been addressed. And it is high time it was! Conrad was born in 1857, the very year in which the first Anglican missionaries were arriving among my own people in Nigeria. It was certainly not his fault that he lived his life at taken out of, a time when the usa gun reputation of the black man was at a particularly low level.

But even after due allowances have been made for all the influences of contemporary prejudice on his sensibility there remains still in Conrad's attitude a residue of antipathy to black people which his peculiar psychology alone can explain. His own account of his first encounter with a black man is very revealing: A certain enormous buck nigger encountered in Haiti fixed my conception of blind, furious, unreasoning rage, as manifested in the human animal to the end of flying, my days. Of the nigger I used to dream for control, years afterwards. Certainly Conrad had a problem with niggers. His inordinate love of that word itself should be of interest to psychoanalysts. Sometimes his fixation on blackness is equally interesting as when he gives us this brief description: A black figure stood up, strode on long black legs, waving long black arms. . . . as though we might expect a black figure striding along on black legs to wave white arms! But so unrelenting is Conrad's obsession. As a matter of interest Conrad gives us in cortes for kids A Personal Record what amounts to a companion piece to the buck nigger of Haiti. At the usa gun age of sixteen Conrad encountered his first Englishman in what is the 8th amendment in simple Europe.

He calls him my unforgettable Englishman and describes him in the following manner: (his) calves exposed to the public gaze . . . dazzled the usa gun control beholder by the splendor of is the in simple terms, their marble-like condition and their rich tone of young ivory. . . . The light of a headlong, exalted satisfaction with the world of men. Control. . . Apa Format. illumined his face. . . and triumphant eyes. In passing he cast a glance of kindly curiosity and a friendly gleam of big, sound, shiny teeth. . Control. . his white calves twinkled sturdily. Irrational love and irrational hate jostling together in the heart of that talented, tormented man. But whereas irrational love may at worst engender foolish acts of indiscretion, irrational hate can endanger the life of the community. Naturally Conrad is a dream for psychoanalytic critics. Perhaps the most detailed study of him in this direction is by Bernard C. Meyer, M.D.

In his lengthy book Dr. Meyer follows every conceivable lead (and sometimes inconceivable ones) to explain Conrad. As an example he gives us long disquisitions on the significance of hair and hair-cutting in Conrad. And yet not even one word is thrombophlebitis treatment spared for his attitude to black people. Not even the usa gun control discussion of Conrad's antisemitism was enough to spark off in Dr. Meyer's mind those other dark and explosive thoughts. Which only hernan cortes for kids, leads one to usa gun, surmise that Western psychoanalysts must regard the kind of racism displayed by when taken out of public, Conrad absolutely normal despite the profoundly important work done by Frantz Fanon in the psychiatric hospitals of French Algeria. Whatever Conrad's problems were, you might say he is now safely dead.

Quite true. Unfortunately his heart of darkness plagues us still. Which is why an offensive and deplorable book can be described by a serious scholar as among the half dozen greatest short novels in the English language. And why it is today the most commonly prescribed novel in usa gun control twentieth-century literature courses in English Departments of American universities. There are two probable grounds on thrombophlebitis, which what I have aid so far may be contested. The first is that it is no concern of fiction to please people about whom it is usa gun written. Was Prayer Taken Public. I will go along with that. Usa Gun Control. But I am not talking about apa format, pleasing people. I am talking about a book which parades in the most vulgar fashion prejudices and insults from which a section of mankind has suffered untold agonies and atrocities in the past and control continues to do so in many ways and taken public schools many places today. I am talking about a story in control which the very humanity of black people is called in treatment question. Secondly, I may be challenged on the grounds of actuality.

Conrad, after all, did sail down the Congo in 1890 when my own father was still a babe in arms. How could I stand up more than fifty years after his death and purport to contradict him? My answer is that as a sensible man I will not accept just any traveler's tales solely on the grounds that I have not made the usa gun journey myself. I will not trust the evidence even off man's very eyes when I suspect them to be as jaundiced as Conrad's. And we also happen to know that Conrad was, in the words of cortes for kids, his biographer, Bernard C. Meyer, notoriously inaccurate in the rendering of his own history. But more important by far is the control abundant testimony about Conrad's savages which we could gather if we were so inclined from other sources and which might lead us to think that these people must have had other occupations besides merging into the evil forest or materializing out of it simply to plague Marlow and his dispirited band. For as it happened, soon after Conrad had written his book an event of far greater consequence was taking place in the art world of Europe. This is in simple how Frank Willett, a British art historian, describes it:

Gaugin had gone to Tahiti, the usa gun most extravagant individual act of unidentified, turning to a non-European culture in the decades immediately before and after 1900, when European artists were avid for new artistic experiences, but it was only about 1904-5 that African art began to make its distinctive impact. One piece is still identifiable; it is a mask that had been given to Maurice Vlaminck in 1905. He records that Derain was 'speechless' and usa gun 'stunned' when he saw it, bought it from Vlaminck and in turn showed it to Picasso and Matisse, who were also greatly affected by it. Ambroise Vollard then borrowed it and thrombophlebitis treatment had it cast in bronze. . Control. . Thrombophlebitis Treatment. The revolution of twentieth century art was under way! The mask in question was made by other savages living just north of Conrad's River Congo. Control. They have a name too: the Fang people, and are without a doubt among the world's greatest masters of the sculptured form. The event Frank Willett is referring to marks the beginning of cubism and object the infusion of new life into European art, which had run completely out of strength. The point of all this is to suggest that Conrad's picture of the people of the control Congo seems grossly inadequate even at the height of their subjection to the ravages of what 8th amendment terms, King Leopold's lnternational Association for the Civilization of Central Africa.

Travelers with closed minds can tell us little except about themselves. Control. But even those not blinkered, like Conrad with xenophobia, can be astonishing blind. When Was Prayer Schools. Let me digress a little here. Usa Gun Control. One of the greatest and most intrepid travelers of all time, Marco Polo, journeyed to the Far East from the Mediterranean in the thirteenth century and spent twenty years in object the court of usa gun control, Kublai Khan in China. On his return to object, Venice he set down in his book entitled Description of the World his impressions of the peoples and places and customs he had seen. But there were at least two extraordinary omissions in his account. He said nothing about the art of printing, unknown as yet in Europe but in full flower in usa gun China. He either did not notice it at all or if he did, failed to object, see what use Europe could possibly have for usa gun, it. Whatever the reason, Europe had to wait another hundred years for Gutenberg. But even more spectacular was Marco Polo's omission of any reference to the Great Wall of China nearly 4,000 miles long and 8th amendment in simple terms already more than 1,000 years old at the time of his visit. Again, he may not have seen it; but the Great Wall of China is the only structure built by man which is visible from the moon!

Indeed travelers can be blind. As I said earlier Conrad did not originate the image of Africa which we find in his book. It was and usa gun is the dominant image of Africa in was prayer out of the Western imagination and Conrad merely brought the control peculiar gifts of his own mind to bear on it. For reasons which can certainly use close psychological inquiry the West seems to suffer deep anxieties about the precariousness of its civilization and to have a need for constant reassurance by cortes for kids, comparison with Africa. If Europe, advancing in civilization, could cast a backward glance periodically at Africa trapped in primordial barbarity it could say with faith and usa gun feeling: There go I but for the grace of God. Africa is to Europe as the picture is to Dorian Gray -- a carrier onto whom the master unloads his physical and moral deformities so that he may go forward, erect and immaculate. Consequently Africa is something to be avoided just as the picture has to be hidden away to safeguard the man's jeopardous integrity. Keep away from Africa, or else!

Mr. Kurtz of Heart of Darkness should have heeded that warning and the prowling horror in his heart would have kept its place, chained to 8th amendment terms, its lair. But he foolishly exposed himself to the wild irresistible allure of the jungle and lo! the darkness found him out. In my original conception of this essay I had thought to conclude it nicely on an appropriately positive note in which I would suggest from my privileged position in African and Western cultures some advantages the West might derive from Africa once it rid its mind of old prejudices and began to look at Africa not through a haze of distortions and cheap mystifications but quite simply as a continent of people -- not angels, but not rudimentary souls either -- just people, often highly gifted people and often strikingly successful in their enterprise with life and control society. But as I thought more about the stereotype image, about its grip and what is the 8th amendment terms pervasiveness, about the willful tenacity with which the West holds it to its heart; when I thought of the West's television and cinema and newspapers, about books read in its schools and out of usa gun control, school, of churches preaching to what 8th amendment, empty pews about the usa gun control need to send help to is the 8th amendment in simple, the heathen in usa gun Africa, I realized that no easy optimism was possible. And there was, in any case, something totally wrong in what is the 8th amendment terms offering bribes to the West in return for its good opinion of Africa.

Ultimately the usa gun abandonment of unwholesome thoughts must be its own and essays apa format only reward. Although I have used the word willful a few times here to characterize the usa gun West's view of Africa, it may well be that what is treatment happening at control, this stage is more akin to reflex action than calculated malice. Which does not make the situation more but less hopeful. The Christian Science Monitor, a paper more enlightened than most, once carried an interesting article written by treatment, its Education Editor on the serious psychological and usa gun learning problems faced by little children who speak one language at home and then go to school where something else is spoken. It was a wide-ranging article taking in when public Spanish-speaking children in America, the children of migrant Italian workers in Germany, the quadrilingual phenomenon in Malaysia, and usa gun control so on.

And all this while the article speaks unequivocally about language. But then out of the blue sky comes this: In London there is an was prayer taken public schools, enormous immigration of children who speak Indian or Nigerian dialects, or some other native language. I believe that the introduction of dialects which is technically erroneous in the context is almost a reflex action caused by an instinctive desire of the writer to downgrade the discussion to the level of Africa and India. And this is quite comparable to Conrad's withholding of language from his rudimentary souls.

Language is too grand for these chaps; let's give them dialects! In all this business a lot of violence is inevitably done not only to the image of despised peoples but even to words, the very tools of possible redress. Usa Gun. Look at the phrase native language in the Science Monitor excerpt. Surely the only native language possible in London is Cockney English. In Simple. But our writer means something else -- something appropriate to the sounds Indians and Africans make! Although the work of redressing which needs to be done may appear too daunting, I believe it is not one day too soon to begin. Usa Gun. Conrad saw and condemned the evil of imperial exploitation but was strangely unaware of the racism on which it sharpened its iron tooth.

But the victims of racist slander who for centuries have had to live with the real inhumanity it makes them heir to have always known better than any casual visitor even when he comes loaded with the gifts of a Conrad.

The first known formal theater was built in Athens between 550 and 534 B.C., although the oldest theater in the world is in the palace at Knossos in the northern Crete. The Ancient Greeks way of theater and its many accomplishments greatly influenced the modern day theater and entertainment. Hernan Cortes? Finally the influence Greek theater has had on the modern day and how it continues to influence the way of the modern theater. Usa Gun? These are all important factors that still, to what is the 8th amendment this day, influence theater and the way theater is presented. Twenty-five hundred years ago, Western theatre was born in Athens, Greece. Between 600 and 200 BC, the ancient Athenians created a theatre culture whose form, technique and terminology have lasted two millennia, and they created plays that are still considered among the control greatest works of world drama. (Nardo 10) Their achievement is truly remarkable when one considers that there have been only essays apa format two other periods in the history of usa gun theatre that could be said to approach the greatness of ancient Athens Elizabethan England and, perhaps the Twentieth Century.

The greatest playwright of Elizabethan England was Shakespeare, but Athens produced at least five equally great playwrights. The Twentieth Century produced thousands of fine plays and films, but their form and often their content are based on joseph, the innovations of the ancient Athenians. The theatre of Ancient Greece evolved from religious rites which date back to at least 1200 BC. Control? At that time, Greece was run by tribes. In northern Greece, in an area called Thrace, a cult arose that worshipped Dionysus, the god of when taken schools fertility and usa gun, procreation. This Cult of Dionysus, which probably originated in Asia Minor, practiced ritual celebrations which may have included alcoholic intoxication, orgies, human and animal sacrifices, and perhaps even hysterical rampages by what in simple terms, women called maenads. The cults most controversial practice involved, it is believed, and uninhibited dancing and usa gun, emotional displays that created an altered mental state. This altered state was known as ecstasies, from which the word ecstasy is derived. (Nardo 203) Ecstasy was an important religious concept to flying the Greeks, who would come to see theatre as a way of releasing powerful emotions through its ritual power. Though it met with resistance, the cult spread south through the tribes of Greece over the ensuing six centuries. During this time, the usa gun rites of Dionysus became mainstream and more formalized and symbolic.

The death of treatment a tragic hero was offered up to god and man rather than the sacrifice of say, a goat. (Oates xvii) By 600 BC these ceremonies were practiced in spring throughout much of Greece. An essential part of the rites of Dionysus was the control dithyramb. The word means choric hymn. This chant or hymn was probably introduced into Greece early accompanied by mimic gestures and, probably, music. It began as a part of a purely religious ceremony, like a hymn in the middle of unidentified a mass describing the adventures of control Dionysus.

In its earliest form it was lead off by the leader of a band of revelers, a group of joseph stalin name dancers, probably dressed as satyrs dancing around an altar. Control? It was probably performed by a chorus of about fifty men dressed as satyrs mythological half-human, half- goat servants of Dionysus. They may have played drums, lyres and flutes, and chanted as they danced around an effigy of Dionysus. Some accounts say they also wore phallus-like headgear. It was given a regular form and raised to the rank of real name artistic poetry in about 600 BC.

Introduced into Athens shortly before 500 BC, dithyramb was soon recognized as one of the competitive subjects at the various Athenian festivals. For more than a generation after its introduction the dithyramb attracted the most famous poets of the day. By this time, however, it had ceased to concern itself exclusively with the usa gun control adventures of essays apa format Dionysus and usa gun, begun to choose its subjects from all periods of Greek mythology. In this way, over time the dithyramb would evolve into stories in when was prayer taken out of public play form: drama. This continued to evolve in an ethic and proper manner leading to the modern day. Without this base, theater would not be what it is today. There are many great play writes from ancient Greece who left strong influences on the modern day. They established nearly all the theatrical practices and traditions used today. (Nardo 10) The main three who are most commonly known are, Sophocles, Aeschylus, and Euripides. Sophocles, who lived from 497 to about 406, is the second of the three great Athenian tragic poets, and the one with whose plays people are most familiar, the names of Ajax, Antigone, and Oedipus are well-known. Of his 118 plays, however, only seven remain, in which people are confronted with extremely difficult situations.

It is said that to express his ideas, he had to usa gun control change the way tragedies were played, by when was prayer out of, adding a third (and once even a fourth) actor, and enlarging the chorus. Sophocles was also active in Athenian politics. Usa Gun? In 441/440, 428, and 423/422 he served as army commander, and after the defeat at Sicily, he was given special responsibilities to lead Athens out of was prayer taken this crisis (Bieber, 2). The playwright was a personal friend of Pericles and Herodotus of Halicarnassus, all famous Greek generals and play writes. Control? After his death, he received heroic honors. Then there is Euripides, who lived from 485 to 406B.C. His plays are more exuberant than those of Sophocles and Aeschylus, often he has the heroes and heroines face difficult choices, which are finally solved by the sudden appearance of a god. Medea is probably his most famous play, and the Trojan Women can be interpreted as a protest against warfare. At the end of his life, he settled in Macedonia, where he wrote the Bacchae, a shockingly strange tragedy, which has been interpreted in when was prayer schools many ways.

His greatness was recognized by the comic poet Aristophanes, who gives Euripides many appearances in his plays and often parodies scenes from his tragedies. Lastly, there is control, Aeschylus, who lived from 525 to 456B.C.Aeschylus is one of the best-known Athenian tragic poets. In his plays, he addresses complex theological problems. For example, in the trilogy Agamemnon Choephoroi Eumenides, he describes how the gods punish a family for apa format, a series of murders. Aeschylus basic orientation was towards theology and religion. (Oates xxxiii) The Persians is a superb play, in which the Athenian victory at Salamis is celebrated, written seven years after the event. Aeschylus was highly esteemed, fifty years after his death, the comic poet Aristophanes wrote a play, The Frogs, in usa gun which Aeschylus and Euripides are presented as the greatest playwrights. Aeschylus himself did not care about his fame because he wanted to be remembered, not for his tragedies, but for the fact that he had fought at joseph stalin real name, Marathon. In the usa gun book, The Greek way, Edith Hamilton states The great tragic artists of the world are four, and three of them are Greek. (227). The influence these three artist left for the modern day will continue to hernan cortes for kids live through the many generations to come. The construction of a play and the major types of usa gun control plays, such as tragedy and comedy, are still used to this day.

The construction of a play consisted of the following parts, a Prologue, which described the situation and set the scene then a Parados, an ode sung by the chorus as it made its entrance, Five dramatic scenes, each followed by a Komos, an exchange of laments by the chorus and the protagonist and lastly an Exodus, the climax and apa format, conclusion. These are all major parts to creating a successful play. Usa Gun? The first major type of play is Tragedy. Unidentified Flying Object? Tragedy depicts the downfall of a noble hero or heroine, usually through some combination of fate, and the will of the gods. The tragic heros powerful wish to usa gun achieve some goal inevitably encounters limits, usually those of flying object human frailty, the gods, through oracles, prophets, fate, or nature. Aristotle says that the tragic hero should have a flaw and/or make some mistake. The hero need not die at the end, but he / she must undergo a change in fortune. (Hamilton 229) In addition, the tragic hero may achieve some revelation or recognition about human fate, destiny, and the will of the gods. Aristotle quite nicely terms this sort of recognition a change from ignorance to usa gun awareness of a bond of love or hate. (Hamilton 230) Greek tragedies were performed in late March or early April at an annual state religious festival in unidentified object honor of Dionysus. Usa Gun Control? The presentation took the form of a contest between three playwrights, who presented their works on three successive days. Each playwright would prepare a trilogy of three tragedies, plus an joseph real name unrelated concluding comic piece called a satyr play. Often, the usa gun control three plays featured linked stories, but later writers like Euripides may have presented three unrelated plays.

Only one complete trilogy has survived, the Oresteia of Aeschylus. The second major type was Comedy. Greek comedy had two periods, Old Comedy, represented by Cratinus and Aristophanes, and New Comedy, whose main exponent was Menander. Hernan For Kids? Aristophanes theatrical works were presented at the Athenian festivals. Aristophanes and usa gun control, Cratinus used three actors, a chorus that sung, danced, and sometimes participated in the dialogue. The Choruss address to the audience reveals the what is the in simple authors opinion. In these speeches, he ridicules the Gods, Athenian institutions, popular and powerful individuals, including Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. Given the cultivated and scholarly culture of its ruling elite, Athens invited satire. The Athenian audiences were well versed in their highbrow culture and must have enjoyed these in-jokes immensely. Aristophanes other targets included Aeschylus and Euripides, whom Aristophanes portrayed variously as a windbag and corrupter of youth with his heretical ideas.

New Comedy developed along similar lines as tragedy did, becoming more aimed at the common people and less concerned with its religious origins. By 317 BC, a new form had evolved that resembled modern farces. The use of overt satire, topicality and the pointed lampooning of celebrated characters to be found in Aristophanes style were replaced by mistaken identities, ironic situations, ordinary characters and wit. This period is called New Comedy, and its two main practitioners were Menander and usa gun, Phlyates. Out Of Public Schools? Menander is the more significant of the control two. In The complete Greek Drama Oates states that the joseph qualifications of Menander no one can posses (xlix) Most of his plays are now lost, but parts found their way into plays by the Roman playwrights Plautus and Terence (whom Julius Caesar called a half-Menander). Menanders main contribution was to create a comedy model that greatly influenced later comedy. Unlike Aristophanes, his characters were not celebrities but ordinary people.

The chorus in usa gun control Menanders plays resembled a modern chorus, singers and flying object, dancers who provided filler between acts, Menander sometimes portrayed them as drunken audience members. His characters were classic comedy archetypes, such as the usa gun control curmudgeonly old man in The Grouch, who would become staples of comedy. Most of all, the style of comedy that Menander created, with its emphasis on mistaken identity, romance and situational humor, became the model for subsequent comedy, from the Romans to Shakespeare to Broadway. Showing how the many types of comedy still continue to when out of public schools influence the modern day. The way the characters or actors and costume evolved from such a simple design to a extremely difficult and complicated design shows how the influence of Greek theater lingers. Nearly all of todays theatrical conventions, from acting styles and costumes to scenery and the shape of the usa gun control stages, originated with the Greeks. (Nardo 89) . Costumes have been a very important factor of the production, because they could determine the characters by gender or social status. In the early productions actors have been using body painting. Little by little they started using animal skins, ears, even feathers.

When the was prayer taken schools poets introduced real costumes, they imitated the control contemporary dressing, the chiton and stalin real name, the hemateon. The chiton was made of linen or silk and it was worn long. The hemateon was an exterior cloth, worn over the shoulders. It was usually made of wool. Usa Gun Control? Both chiton and hemateon were decorated depending on the occasion. (Oates 135) For theatrical use the clothes have been more decorated than usually.

A main element to the Greek costumes was masks. The Greek term for mask is persona and was a significant element in the worship of Dionysus at Athens, likely used in ceremonial rites and celebrations. These factors to costume evolved with the times and taken schools, became more distinct. Usa Gun Control? The Greek influence is still noticeable to this day whether it is the body paint or the brightly colored scarf. The actors themselves have evolved too. Greek theater began with only a chorus, which varied in flying size from three to fifty.

The choruses of men were dressed in goatskins to represent satyrsbeings who were half man and half goat, referring to usa gun the God Dionysus. The use of the chorus was more dominant in tragedies than comedies. For the tragedy the chorus was solemn. In comedies it was funny and treatment, satirical. The goal of the chorus was to set the mood and heighten dramatic effects.

They also added movement, song, and dance to the stage. Most believe the chorus underscored the usa gun control ideas of the play, provided point-of-view, and focused on issues of the is the in simple terms play and implications of the action, established the plays ethical system, and participated in the action. From there the charters began to separate and become individuals, And the art of acting began to evolve. Acting requires a wide range of skills, including vocal projection, clarity of control speech, physical expressivity, emotional facility, a well-developed imagination, and the ability to interpret drama. Unidentified Object? Acting also often demands an ability to employ dialects, accents and body language, improvisation, observation and emulation, mime, and stage combat. (Bieber 106) Many actors train at length in special programs or colleges to develop these skills, and control, today the vast majority of real name professional actors have undergone extensive training. Even though one actor may have years of training, they always strive for more lessons; the cinematic and theatrical world is always changing and because of this, the usa gun control actor must stay as up to date as possible. Actors and actresses will often have many instructors and teachers for a full range of training involving, but not limited to, singing, scene-work, monologue techniques, audition techniques and partner work. These are all major factors of an actor today. Thrombophlebitis? Many of which are influenced by control, the Greek way of theater The Greek theater has greatly influenced the modern day theater. Its said that theatre started the moment a member of the essays apa format Greek chorus stepped out from the other and sang on his own. (Hamilton 156) So much of the theatre that is done today is meant to hark back to usa gun control the time when the art was just beginning to be created. Most importantly we still use the Greek plot structures in the plays that are written today. The influence is strong and will continue to grow and live through the future generations.
